Well, good for you, JD. You have what most of us are striving for. I wish you well in your job search. This has been asked before:

http://brokewallstreeter.com/2009/03/why-i-have-debt-with-a-six-figure-income/

I have been working on Wall Street for just under 2 years, so I haven't been collecting the big bucks for a long time (this is my 1st job over 6 figures, my last job paid $40k, obviously not on Wall Street). The other reasons for my low net worth: I own a modest home 2 states away and need to rent a room up here during the work week, lost rental income from my home in PA for a lot of 2008/9, I support an unemployed sister (benefits run out soon, so it's only going to get worse), I help out my best friend who has cancer (whatever I earn at my part-time job I give to her), I have been laid off 3 times before, so I am still paying off debt I racked up during that period (HELOC, credit cards). I live a simple life. I put in an 11 hour day, drive a Hyundai, haven't gone on a vacation since 2001, the room I rent is cheap and in a high crime area (a cop was killed last week 25 blocks away). Sure, if I got this job right out of school I'd be thinking of retiring early, but it's not a perfect world. Since we laid off half the company last year, I don't know if the bonus will be there next time. Maybe you should start a blog or keep track of your net worth and send us some updates if you'd be willing. Thanks for visiting!

How the heck could you have such a low net worth? I spent the last 7 years on Wall Street working in a back-office job until I got laid off early this year and I still have a net worth of over 500k most of it completely liquid. And that's from a back-office job!
